The European Commission today announced new humanitarian support for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with an initial amount of €60 million for 2025. Following recent developments in the East, the EU is ready to increase emergency assistance, especially for displaced populations around Goma.
The funding will address urgent needs of displaced people and those affected by conflicts and epidemics.
Support includes:
- Shelter and camp management.
- Clean water systems and latrines.
- Basic food rations or cash transfers.
- Education in Emergencies for vulnerable children.
The EU is a significant donor for humanitarian response in the DRC. This funding increases total EU humanitarian assistance to over €272 million since 2023, alongside EU Humanitarian Aid Flights delivering personnel and cargo in eastern DRC.
Civilian protection is a priority, with emphasis on addressing gender-based violence through prevention and comprehensive responses including health and psychosocial support.
Background
DRC faces high humanitarian needs due to conflict, poverty, malnutrition, and disease outbreaks. The EU and its Member States have consistently provided funding since the crisis began.
Before this crisis, 800,000 internally displaced people were in crowded camps near Goma. Recently, camps for 300,000 people were emptied as inhabitants fled.
Humanitarian access remains limited in conflict zones, with over 480,000 newly displaced in North Kivu and 178,000 in South Kivu since October 2024, adding to the 6.4 million already displaced.
