House in Discussion with European Commissioner Hoekstra

Members of the European Affairs Committee will meet with European Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra on Wednesday, March 5, for an introductory discussion. The European Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero, and Clean Growth will explain the new work program of the European Commission. The discussion can be followed live from 3:00 PM.

Work Program 2025

Each year, the European Commission sets a work program outlining the key proposals for the following year. The political priorities outlined by the president, Ursula von der Leyen, form the basis for the work program. The External link:work program of 2025 is the first work program of this European Commission, formed after the 2024 European elections.

Proposals

In the coming period, there will be more focus on simplifying EU legislation, strengthening the economy, and reinforcing European defense. Preparations for the new EU multiannual budget and the potential accession of new member states, such as Ukraine, are also on the agenda.

What does the House of Representatives do?

Once the work program is released, the European Affairs Committee, in collaboration with other committees, examines which proposals are important for the Netherlands. By setting these priorities, the House indicates which topics will be followed with extra interest. The House can also decide that certain European proposals receive a rapporteur who will closely monitor the topic. The House will vote on the total list of priorities in April.

State of the European Union

The debate on the State of the European Union will take place on Thursday, June 12, this year. During this annual debate, Members of Parliament, together with Dutch Members of the European Parliament, discuss these priorities. The Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs are also present at the plenary debate.
