In December, 6 plane trees from Delftseplein (center) were moved to IJsselmonde to make space for the construction of the new residential and office tower, Tree House. Four plane trees from before World War II did not have to be moved. However, one of these monumental trees has now been relocated 20 meters.
The tree was shifted slightly southeast on February 4th. Relocating such a large tree in the city center is unique. To move the plane tree with its root ball (together weighing approximately 160,000 kilos) upright, two heavy cranes were needed.
IJsselmonde
The 6 non-monumental plane trees that were previously moved to IJsselmonde were transported horizontally. In their new location in IJsselmonde, the plane trees have plenty of space and are planted in open ground. Link opens an external page. This gives them a good chance to grow further.
With the relocation of this last plane tree, the moving project comes to an end. The Municipality of Rotterdam has managed to preserve all the plane trees for the city. Later this year, the construction of the 130-meter high Tree House. Link opens an external page will begin at Delftseplein.
