More Green in the Binckhorst: Test Park Becomes a Place for Nature, Sports, and Meeting

The municipality wants to offer residents of the Binckhorst more greenery in their living environment by creating a temporary Test Park. This park along the Binckhorstlaan provides space for meeting, sports, and enjoying nature. It also serves as a nursery for the eventual greening of the Binckhorst. If the land is later needed for development, the trees will be transplanted to other locations in the Binckhorst, such as parks or the future Waterfront Park.

The transformation of the Binckhorst from an industrial and business area to a full-fledged residential and work area with sufficient greenery is in full swing and will take years. Meanwhile, the number of residents in the Binckhorst is rapidly increasing. Alderman Robert van Asten: “Facilities that grow with this area are important but also challenging when it is still developing. This is therefore a great solution! By smartly using this temporarily available land and reusing the greenery for the future, we are building a better neighborhood to live and recreate together.”

Design

The design of the Test Park takes biodiversity and sustainability into account. The existing vegetation and soil, which are already rich in wild bees and other species, form the basis for the park. The park will have height differences allowing different plant and grass species to grow. The green zone will be complemented with various types of trees. Additionally, there will be space for sports and meeting. The already present Carweide and Sportweide are part of the Test Park.

Alderman Robert Barker (Public Space, Animal Welfare & Environment): ‘In a green city, life is more pleasant. Therefore, we are working throughout The Hague to green neighborhoods and strengthen nature. Also in emerging neighborhoods like the Binckhorst, where more and more residents find their home, we want to create more green. The new Test Park will be a pleasant place for people and animals. A place where nature gets space and which will contribute to further greening the Binckhorst in the long term.’

Building Together in the Binckhorst

The initiative for the Test Park stems from the desire of residents and entrepreneurs to create more green and meeting places in the area. The plan was developed in collaboration with I’m Binck and discussed with the General Association for Nature Conservation (AVN). The plan was enriched with ideas submitted during the Binckmarkt on November 7, 2024. The municipality has started creating height differences for the various types of plants and grasses. The planting of plants and shrubs will follow in the spring, which will be celebrated with the residents.
