More Granted New Homes in 2024

In 2024, permits were issued for more than 34,000 owner-occupied homes, 28 percent more than in 2023. In addition, almost 33,000 rental homes were granted building permits, 16 percent more than in 2023. This is the highest number of permitted rental homes in the past ten years.

Since 2022, approximately the same number of rental and owner-occupied homes have been granted permits each year. Between 2015 and 2021, the ratio of the number of permitted owner-occupied and rental homes was about one-third rental homes and two-thirds owner-occupied homes.

The number of granted new homes is an indicator of the number of homes that will be built in the near future. Housing transformations, such as converting offices into homes, are not included in the figures on building permits for new construction. The number of granted new homes and the granted construction costs are based on a monthly survey among municipalities. CBS previously reported that in 2024, 69,000 new homes were added to the stock.
