The 2025 report on the single market and competitiveness highlights the challenges and opportunities for the EU

Today, the European Commission releases its annual report on the single market and competitiveness, outlining the strengths and weaknesses of the EU economy. It serves as an analytical framework for the competitiveness compass, a strategy to boost the European economy.

The report relies on 22 key indicators, such as market integration, R&D spending, and electricity prices, to assess EU competitiveness and identify areas needing attention, like completing the single market, enhancing innovation capacity, industry decarbonization, and reducing strategic dependencies.

Stéphane Séjourné, Executive Vice-President for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy, stated: “Our economic success hinges on a simple yet powerful figure: 450 million consumers. The single market is, by far, the most important engine—still largely underutilized—for European competitiveness. The reports conclusions are clear: its time to remove the remaining barriers between the 27 Member States and fully leverage the scale effects of the single market to provide European businesses with seamless access to one of the worlds largest integrated markets.”

The conclusions of this edition will guide policy development to strengthen EU competitiveness and fully exploit the potential of the single market. They will feed into upcoming initiatives such as the Decarbonized Industry Pact and the Single Market Strategy.

Commission clears acquisition of Arbonia Climate Division by Midea

The European Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the acquisition of sole control of Arbonia Climate Division of Switzerland by Midea Group Co. Ltd. (‘Midea) of China.

The transaction relates primarily to the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning sector.

The Commission concluded that the notified transaction would not raise competition concerns, given its limited impact on competition in the markets where the companies are active. The notified transaction was examined under the normal merger review procedure.

More information is available on the Commissions competition website, in the public case register under the case number M.11570.
