Fewer asylum requests and more family reunifications in 2024

In 2024, more than 32,000 people submitted their first asylum application in the Netherlands. This is 16 percent less than in 2023. The number of family reunifications increased to 11,900 people, which is 17 percent more than in 2023. This was reported by CBS based on the latest asylum figures from the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND).

Most asylum requests in 2024, as in previous years, came from people of Syrian nationality; 11,500. After Syrians, the most requests came from Iraqis (2,200 first asylum requests), followed by Turks (1,900) and Eritreans (1,500).

For the first time in five years, the number of first asylum requests from Syrians decreased, down 12 percent from 2023. The number of asylum requests from people from Turkey, Eritrea, and Yemen also decreased by 35, 38, and 45 percent compared to 2023. The number of asylum requests from Iraqis has increased over the past five years, especially in 2023 and the first half of 2024.
