Dutch Industry Recovers in 2024

The Dutch industry shrank for several quarters after the second quarter of 2022. In the first quarter of 2024, the added value of the industry hit a low point, down 5.6% from the peak in 2022, adjusted for price changes and seasonal effects.

The Dutch industry faced multiple quarters of decline after mid-2022. In early 2024, the industrys added value reached a low of 5.6% below the 2022 peak, adjusted for price and seasonal effects. However, in the second and third quarters of 2024, the industry grew by 2.9% and 1.3%, respectively. For 2025, industrial entrepreneurs are optimistic about their revenue, despite feeling their competitive position deteriorated in 2024, according to CBS.

The industry is the largest sector in the Netherlands after trade, accounting for 12% of the total added value in 2023, down from 14% in 2000. The industry also plays a vital role in Dutch goods exports, contributing over 80%.

Largest Growth in the Machinery Industry

The industry comprises various sectors. Due to seasonal effects, the added value of these sectors in the third quarter of 2024 was compared to the same quarter in 2022, showing a 0.7% decrease. Most industrial sectors shrank during this period, with the largest decline in transport equipment, textiles, clothing, leather, plastics, and building materials industries. However, three sectors experienced growth, with the machinery industry leading at 23.5% growth.
