Every year, over 1 billion packages enter the EU via the Netherlands, constituting about 40% of total e-commerce imports. Many products from Asia are delivered directly to European consumers and businesses, with platforms like SHEIN and AliExpress growing rapidly.
Gerard Bakker, inspector-general of the NVWA, states: Cheap products from non-EU webshops can be unsafe. A significant volume of packages from these webshops reaches consumers, including unsafe products. Everyone must contribute to change this situation. Businesses, regulators, and consumers alike must be aware of what they purchase online!
Over 85% Unsafe Products
Research shows that 85% to 95% of inspected products from SHEIN, AliExpress, and Temu do not meet European product legislation. These products are often ineffective or pose risks, such as toys with small parts that can cause choking, or electronics that can overheat and catch fire.
European Product Regulations
In Europe, products must comply with specific regulations. Companies must prove their products are safe and sustainable, and there must be a representative in Europe accountable for compliance. The NVWA and other authorities monitor these regulations in the Netherlands.
Consumer and Environmental Protection Under Pressure
The poor compliance with EU product laws, combined with direct deliveries from Asia, leads to an increase in unsafe, unhealthy, and unsustainable products in the Netherlands. This compromises consumer and environmental safety and creates unfair competition for compliant businesses.
Joint Responsibility
Due to the explosive growth of e-commerce, it is impossible for Dutch authorities to effectively control all products at the border. A joint approach is needed, where all parties in the supply chain take responsibility to protect consumers from unsafe and non-compliant products.
