In February 2024, a 36-year-old woman was stabbed to death on the streets of Eindhoven. Her ex-boyfriend turned himself in to the police in Belgium the next day, where he was arrested. Today, the 38-year-old man appeared before the court for the murder of his ex-girlfriend. The Public Prosecution Service demands a prison sentence of 22 years against him.
On Sunday, February 4, 2024, at around 3:00 AM, the police received a report of an assault on a girl on Pastoor Petersstraat in Eindhoven. The girl turns out to be the Turkish-Bulgarian Nevin (36). She has been stabbed and later dies that night in the hospital from her injuries. She has been stabbed a total of 17 times.
Arrest
In the subsequent investigation, her ex-boyfriend is identified as a suspect. The man turns himself in to the police in Belgium the next day. There he is arrested on suspicion of involvement in Nevins death. Later that month, he is extradited to the Netherlands. The police already have a fairly good picture of what happened that fatal night and in the period before.
Relationship
Nevin and the suspect had a relationship for several months, but when it ended, the man found it hard to cope, as evidenced by witness statements and messages found on the phones of both the suspect and the victim. The investigation reveals a picture of a suspect who insults, controls, manipulates, and threatens: He wants to know where she is, why she doesnt answer, or who she is chatting with, the prosecutor explains in court.
Assault
Also that evening, it appears that the suspect makes great efforts to contact Nevin. Despite her indicating she does not want contact, he calls her no less than 72 times between 10:09 PM and 1:17 AM. Not once does Nevin answer. Ultimately, the suspect manages to find his ex-girlfriend about an hour after the last call attempt in a café on Stratumseind, where she is with a friend. The friend is assaulted by the suspect there. This incident is also included in todays trial.
Going home
Shortly thereafter, the suspect walks home to change clothes and go to the place where Nevin is ultimately stabbed. Almost the entire route can be followed on surveillance footage. The prosecutor states: By now, we know why the suspect walked home quickly. It is also horrific to see. The suspect hurried home to do exactly what he had previously told a friend: If he caught them, he would kill them both.
Murder
According to the prosecutor, everything indicates that there was premeditated intent and thus murder. He refers to the statement the suspect made to his friend and a voice message he sent to Nevin around 2:10 AM. The fact that he changed clothes at home and grabbed the knife leads the prosecutor to believe that there was a premeditated plan, just as the fact that he was waiting for Nevin at the place where he attacked his ex.
Dehumanizing
The prosecutor asserts that the suspect killed his ex-partner in a gruesome and ruthless manner and emphasizes that it is a case of femicide: He could never accept that their relationship was over. Just as he could not accept that Nevin would have fun with someone else that fateful evening. Nevin was murdered because the suspect did not grant her freedom and joy. In a dehumanizing manner, the suspect deprived Nevin of her life.
Given the above, the Public Prosecution Service deems a prison sentence of 22 years appropriate. The court will make its ruling in two weeks.
