The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) took 74 dogs into custody on January 17 in the village of Zevenhoven, primarily puppies. Inspectors discovered 71 dogs in a basement, overcrowded in cages and poorly cared for. The dogs have been taken to expert shelters. The NVWA is conducting further investigation.
Inspectors visited Zevenhoven for an inspection of an animal keeper. Suspecting that this keeper also used an adjacent property, they checked there as well. In the dark basement of this house, they found many young dogs, packed into stacked cages and severely soiled with their own urine and feces. They also found 3 additional dogs in a bedroom.
Deplorable
To quickly remove the dogs from this deplorable situation, the NVWA has taken them into custody. At various shelters, the animals are being cleaned, examined by a veterinarian, and given medical care if necessary. The owner of the dogs must cover these costs.
The NVWA is further investigating, including why and how long the animals were in the basement. Based on the results of this investigation, the NVWA will determine what other measures will be taken against the dogs owner.
