NWO supports the statement of the European Federation of Academies of Sciences (ALLEA) regarding the threats to academic freedom and international scientific cooperation in the United States. More than forty research institutions and scientific organizations from the Netherlands and other countries have signed the declaration.
On February 19, ALLEA published the statement, expressing its serious concerns about the growing threats to academic freedom, both in the US and beyond. In the US, research projects are halted in many places due to sudden cessation of funding by the new administration. Additionally, certain research areas, such as climate change and gender studies, face censorship. The statement underscores the crucial role of academic freedom in democratic societies and calls for collective efforts to ensure research autonomy worldwide.
NWO fully agrees with this statement. Marcel Levi, chairman of the board of NWO: ‘We are happy to join the position of the international (sister) organizations and are committed to academic freedom, in the Netherlands and elsewhere in the world - as far as our influence reaches. Science thrives on international cooperation and academic freedom and independence.’
