NWO joins the Global Research Initiative on Open Science (GRIOS), which promotes research into open science and maps its impact. NWO contributes an annual amount of 50,000 euros for this.
GRIOS was established under the auspices of the network organization CONOSC (Council for National Open Science Coordination). GRIOS describes itself as follows:
GRIOS aims to assess existing evidence and ongoing research on open science, providing stakeholders with an in-depth analysis of the current state of knowledge on open science. This enables funders, research organizations, and policymakers to increase efficiency and maximize the impact of their open science strategies.
Moreover, GRIOS strives to identify key knowledge gaps and unite the global research community around open science within a joint research program. GRIOS focuses on meta-level knowledge, which is currently lacking in the global open science community.
Although many research funders, institutes, and governments internationally have policies to promote open science, implementation in practice is often difficult. According to GRIOS, differences in models for funding, monitoring, evaluation, and infrastructure are partly to blame. GRIOS aims to lower these barriers based on an evidence-based approach. By utilizing existing scientific knowledge and identifying knowledge gaps, policymakers, the public, and researchers ultimately gain more insight into the benefits of open science, and its broad acceptance is accelerated.
NWO and open science
By joining GRIOS, NWO supports this approach. NWO has been committed to the transition to open science for many years, including active policies on open publications, data, and research software, and with various funds. Open Science NL, established in 2023 with funding from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science to accelerate the transition to open science, is also part of NWO.
