In the spring of 2024, the lighting in the Sijtwendetunnel was replaced. The separate tunnel tubes of the three tunnels that make up the Sijtwendetunnel (Vliet, Park, and Spoortunnel) were closed alternately for several weeks.
We investigated how residents, entrepreneurs, and regular tunnel users experienced these closures. They provided important advice for future renovations.
Roel Jonkman (environment manager PTZ) emphasizes: ‘To keep the Sijtwendetunnel safe and accessible, more than just replacing the lighting is needed. New fans and a renewed energy system are essential.’
There will be long-term closures, causing traffic disruptions. Together with the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg, we conducted a study.
The study provides insights into how people experienced recent closures. This helps Rijkswaterstaat and other parties make better decisions.
Significant Impact
The closures had a major impact on daily life. Many travelers had to adjust their routes, adding 10 to 30 minutes of travel time. Detours caused congestion in residential areas.
Results
The study shows that people prioritize safety and an environmentally friendly tunnel, even if it means longer closures. Balancing accessibility and economic interests is crucial.
What Was Investigated?
The Participatory Value Evaluation method was used to involve participants in decision-making. The study focused on closure experiences, communication, and key points for future closures. 671 people participated, mostly residents.
