In January 2025, the Spijkenisser Bridge was closed for two nights due to maintenance. Another night was added in early February 2025. Why is this maintenance necessary while a major renovation is already underway?
During this renovation of the Spijkenisser Bridge, Rijkswaterstaat is renewing all technical systems and installations. We are addressing a significant part of the bridge, but not everything. The bridges structure remains in good condition, and its renovation is scheduled for post-2030. However, the lifting cables will be replaced during this renovation, but only later in 2025.
Bridge as Open as Possible
Typically, a bridge renovation involves closing the road for an extended period. Uniquely, this renovation is being carried out while keeping the bridge as open as possible for road and marine traffic. Consequently, regular maintenance is still required for components not being renovated or replaced later in 2025. This ensures the bridge remains safe and available during renovations.
Inspecting and Testing
During the two-night closures in January, the lifting cables of both hoists were inspected and lubricated. A so-called FIT test was conducted during the last night closure in early February, testing if all electrical systems and installations still function correctly, such as whether the backup generator activates when power fails.
To perform this maintenance safely, the bridge must be closed. This is done at night when traffic is lighter. We try to combine tasks as much as possible, but thats not always feasible. Maintenance is consciously kept separate from renovation.
All Under One Roof
The Yunex Traffic/Heijmans contractor partnership, executing the renovation, has temporarily taken over the bridges maintenance. Having all tasks under one contractor allows for clear agreements about bridge access and simultaneous tasks, facilitating the sharing of relevant insights gained during maintenance or renovation.
In early May 2025, the Spijkenisser Bridge will close for two more nights for maintenance, with the final two maintenance nights of 2025 following in early December.
