The Ministry of Public Works and Water Management and the Municipality of Groningen have started the next phase of research into a temporary connection for pedestrians and cyclists over the Busbaanbrug. The research results are expected in summer 2025.

The research includes examining the possibility of installing ramps on the grounds near the Busbaanbrug. We are also looking into the safety of cyclists and pedestrians combined with the regular traffic using the Busbaanbrug.

Busbaanbrug Research

On the western grounds next to the Busbaanbrug, we conduct geotechnical and environmental research. This includes assessing whether the soil is strong enough to support ramps. We also conduct archaeological research to determine if there are potentially valuable soil layers and map out the exact paths of existing cables and pipelines. Additionally, we sketch the possible layout of the ramps and their connection to the Busbaanbrug, Antillenstraat, and Ulgersmaweg.

To ensure safety on the potential detour route over the Busbaanbrug, research is conducted on how buses, cyclists, and pedestrians can simultaneously use the bridge. Traffic safety at the connection points of the ramps at Antillenstraat and Ulgersmaweg is also examined. We expect to announce the full research results of the various studies in the summer of 2025.

Construction of New Gerrit Krolbrug

Once the construction of the new Gerrit Krolbrug starts in 2026, the current cycling and walking bridges and ramps can no longer be used as a connection for cyclists and pedestrians. The ramps will be dismantled to make space for the construction of the new bridge. Therefore, together with the Municipality of Groningen and at the request of residents organizations, we are investigating whether the Busbaanbrug is suitable as an alternative route for cyclists, pedestrians, and less mobile individuals.
