Report assists companies in the certification of renewable hydrogen

Report aids companies with renewable hydrogen certification

Companies producing hydrogen can now work on certifying it as RFNBO (renewable fuel of non-biological origin). A new report from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) assists them in this process, ensuring compliance with the renewable energy directive requirements.

Start of Certification

Companies inside and outside the Netherlands producing renewable hydrogen can engage with RFNBO certification through this report. It provides practical examples and advice on showing compliance with the renewable energy directive (RED) standards. The reports initial version is accessible and will be updated based on feedback.

Pilot Projects in the Netherlands

Two pilot projects in the Netherlands, conducted in 2022 and 2024, helped companies meet RED requirements. These projects tested certification schemes, and their insights are included in the report, aiding companies in certification preparations.

European RFNBO Requirements

The RED imposes conditions for using RFNBOs in industry and transportation to count towards directive goals. In the Netherlands, companies must meet these standards to receive production subsidies for RFNBOs. Certified hydrogen can also be accounted for transport goals starting January 1, 2025. The European Commission recognized three RFNBO certification schemes by the end of December: ISCC, CertifHy, and REDcert.
