Starting Monday, February 24, the Rijn en Zon windmill on Adelaarstraat will undergo renovation. The gallery (the walkway at 18 meters high) will be renewed.
The Rijn en Zon windmill is one of the last two windmills in Utrecht. The planned renovation is necessary to preserve this national monument for future generations. Parts of the windmill were already restored in 2015 and 2016. The cap and the sails were replaced, and some wood and masonry work was repaired. Replacing the gallery is the second and final part of the renovation.
A specialized company will carry out the work. First, part of the existing gallery will be removed. Then, a new gallery will be installed. The wooden structure of the gallery will be replaced by a steel structure, as the windmill was originally built in 1913.
To perform the work, a construction site will be set up around the windmill. There are no restrictions on accessibility to the surrounding area. The butcher shop, Slagerij de Molen, will also remain accessible. During the work period, the windmill cannot operate temporarily. Once the work is complete, the windmill will be put back into use.
The work is expected to last until August 2025.
