On Tuesday, January 28, the Senate commemorated former senator Pieter Hofstra. He served the VVD in the Senate from June 12, 2007, to June 7, 2011, often defending motorists interests. Prior to his Senate role, he was a member of the House of Representatives from 1994 to 2006, focusing on public transport and road pricing. Hofstras career included roles as director of Hofstra Traffic Advisors and teaching at the Northern University in Leeuwarden.
Hofstra also held various directorships and was a part-time lecturer. He joined the VVD in 1985 and quickly became an advocate for motorists in the House of Representatives. He regarded blocking road pricing as a significant achievement. In the Senate, he took on leadership roles such as chairman of the Advisory Board for Rijkswaterstaat and the Royal Dutch Transport.
Upon leaving the Senate, then-chairman Van der Linden described him as a representative of opinion, referring to his articles and media appearances. Senate President Jan Anthonie Bruijn remembered him as a decisive and cheerful liberal, whose legacy in Dutch politics will support his family and friends.
