Governments Sign Declaration of Intent for Sustainable Bridges and Viaducts

All coalition governments aim to set challenging but realistic sustainability requirements for the market during the renovation or replacement of a bridge or viaduct. This approach should make it more attractive for the market to invest in innovative techniques. The coalitions results are leading in the increasingly strict legal standards that the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management is implementing for the concrete and steel sectors in civil engineering. The collaboration was officially launched on January 16, 2025, by signing the declaration of intent at InfraTech in Rotterdam.

Under the Coalition Sustainable Bridges and Viaducts, public clients make joint agreements in line with their shared Market Vision and Procurement Strategy. They aim to explore innovations and implement market-ready innovations that are not yet widely used. This encourages market parties to invest in innovations. The coalition intends to maintain these challenging but feasible requirements in contracts with contractors, which is a crucial step towards sector sustainability.

Jacqueline Cramer, chair of Betonakkoord and Bouwakkoord Staal, emphasizes the importance of this joint approach to realize the large-scale renovation and innovation of bridges and viaducts sustainably. The results will soon become the standard for the entire concrete and steel market, ensuring that investments pay off.
