Robberies at gas stations in Den Bosch: OM requests 4 years in prison

In September last year, there were three robberies at gas stations in Rosmalen, Heeswijk-Dinther, and Schaijk within a short period. After a photo of the suspect was shared and a DNA match was found, police arrested a 36-year-old man from Rosmalen as a suspect. Today, he appeared in court. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) demands a four-year prison sentence, including six months conditional.

The gas stations were all robbed between Monday, September 16, and Sunday, September 22. The man consistently wore similar clothing and followed the same method. He approached the cashier and asked for a pack of cigarettes. When the employee handed over the cigarettes, the man grabbed the employee and threatened him with a kitchen knife. The employee opened the cash register, and the man took money from it. Before leaving, he often said ‘sorry’ or gave a fist bump.

Investigation updates

On Monday, September 23, screenshots from the security footage of the robber were shared through investigation updates. In this manner, OM and police request public assistance in solving a crime via the internet, television, or newspapers. The following day, the man was recognized and arrested. During a search of his home and car, the clothing and knife used in the robberies were found. Police also seized various types of drugs. The man confessed to being addicted to drugs and admitted to the three robberies, stating he saw no other option due to a lack of money.

Fear and stress

The OM emphasizes that he robbed three times within a week and had previously been convicted in 2016 for two shop robberies. His actions inflicted fear upon the victims. Such criminal acts also impact society, particularly gas station employees. The prosecuting attorney stated: ‘The perpetrator subjected the victims to intense fear and stress. The threat of physical violence, even without actual injury, creates feelings of helplessness and uncertainty. We are certain that all victims will remember this for their entire lives.’

Today, the OM demanded four years in prison, with six months conditionally. Additionally, the OM requires the man to receive treatment for his addiction and debt counseling. The judge will deliver a ruling in two weeks.
