Rotterdam wants to build 500 to 700 homes at the Lloyd Multiplein in Schiehaven. The majority should be social and mid-range rental housing. The city council has presented the ambitions and desires for the area to the municipal council on Tuesday, March 11.

The ambitions for the Schiehaven North area in Delfshaven have been developed in consultation with local residents, people from surrounding neighborhoods, entrepreneurs, and resident and stakeholder organizations in the area. The area should become a green living environment with plenty of space for cyclists and pedestrians, and places where children can play freely. There should be enough space to exercise, also on the water, such as canoeing or paddleboarding. Residents also consider it important that the homes are sustainable. The exact number of homes is not yet clear.

Urgently Needed

Alderman Chantal Zeegers (Climate, Building, and Housing) emphasizes the importance of building new homes in the city: ‘We urgently need these homes because the demand for housing in the city remains enormous. At the same time, we place great value on a pleasant living environment, with plenty of greenery and attention to sustainability. In Schiehaven North, these elements come together. What I find particularly important is that the plans for this new residential area were not conceived from behind a desk but were developed in consultation with the community. Residents have contributed valuable and inspiring ideas, which together form the ambitions for the further development of the area.’

The ambitions for Schiehaven North are on the agenda of the municipal council in April. The council will decide whether the desires can be implemented. Local residents, people from surrounding neighborhoods, entrepreneurs, and resident and stakeholder organizations remain involved in further developments.

More Information
