In the K-neighborhood near metro station Kraaiennest, a new sustainable sports location for youth in Southeast is located. The Paper Dome is much more than just a sports location. Young people are also challenged to come up with their own initiatives. They can organize activities and help shape and run the Paper Dome themselves.
With the Paper Dome, we offer youth in Southeast a place where they can not only play sports but also meet each other, develop talents, and contribute to the neighborhood.
More than just sports
In the Paper Dome, there is a 3x3 basketball court and space for sports such as dance, indoor soccer, and martial arts. There is also space for specific programs, such as girls-only sports moments and activities for youth with physical or intellectual disabilities. Additionally, it is a place where young people can come together and develop their talents, both on and off the field. Whether its about 3x3 or the lifestyle surrounding it: photography, music, or making videos.
Ambassador Worthy de Jong
Worthy de Jong is the dream ambassador of the Paper Dome. The best 3x3 basketball player in the world grew up in Bijlmer, was always found on the courts, and brought the Dutch 3x3 basketball players the Olympic title in Paris with his golden shot. Worthy de Jong: “I have proven that you can achieve the highest from Bijlmer. And if I can do it, others can too!” From the Paper Dome, he wants to inspire young people to pursue their dreams and give something beautiful back to his neighborhood.
Collaboration
The 3X3 Unites Foundation runs the Paper Dome together with young people, local residents, and organizations. Everyone can participate in activities for free or organize something themselves. The agreement is that activities are organized every week for youth.
Who pays for that?
The Paper Dome does not receive subsidies. The location must pay the fixed costs such as rent, water, and electricity from the event revenues. Young people are allowed to organize or facilitate semi-commercial events 10 times a year. Parties and celebrations are not allowed. We expect that it will be possible to bring in such events. The Paper Dome is, after all, a true landmark designed by the world-renowned architect Shigeru Ban.
Sustainable sports hall
The Paper Dome is a circular dome made of recycled cardboard and steel. It is 10 meters high and has a diameter of 30 meters. In 2003, it was specifically designed for theater (dance) performances in IJburg, but due to its multifunctional design, it is also well-suited as a sports hall.
