From February 28 to March 4, 2025, a part of the Prins Willem-Alexandersluis at the Schellingwoude complex (Amsterdam) was drained for the first time in its lifetime, causing a temporary closure.
From March 5, 2025, at 00:00, the lock was reopened according to schedule, and maritime traffic resumed smoothly.
What Needed to be Done?
For the planned renovation of the lock in 2027 and 2028, preparatory work and an inspection were conducted between February 28 and March 4, 2025.
During the closure, one of the lock gates with collision damage was replaced with a spare gate. The damaged gate will be repaired in the coming period.
Additionally, the drying shields were tested for the first time. These shields were placed around the part of the lock where the gate normally opens and closes, the so-called sluice head. The sluice head was completely drained, allowing us to clean and inspect the sluice head and the slide on which the lock gate moves.
Why Renovate Prins Willem-Alexandersluis?
The preparatory work provided information that gives a better understanding of the objects condition; for example, the slide is only visible when the sluice head is dry.
This information helps us plan the renovation work and necessary disruptions. The subsequent planning in 2027 and 2028 will also be coordinated with the maritime sector.
Renewal of Prins Willem-Alexandersluis
Various parts of the Prins Willem-Alexandersluis are nearing the end of their technical lifespan, which is why parts of the lock will be replaced during the renewal. The renovation will increase the reliability of the lock for maritime traffic.
