Start of Installation of Safety Structure A12 Viaducts Velperbroek

News Report

Published on: February 14, 2025, 16:16

Starting Monday, February 17, 2025, we will begin placing a safety structure under the A12 viaducts at the Velperbroek junction, east of Arnhem.

This is necessary for the safety of traffic on and under the viaducts. Since December 19, 2024, heavy transport (more than 45 tons) has been prohibited from driving over the viaducts. The safety structure is an addition to this measure. Even after the structure is placed, the ban remains temporarily in effect and heavy vehicles must continue to detour via the roundabout under the A12.

We are exploring the possibility of making the structure load-bearing, allowing heavy traffic to drive over the viaducts again. For a permanent solution, renovation or replacement of the viaducts is being considered.

Tooth-notch construction

The A12 viaducts have a so-called tooth-notch construction. This is a method of connecting bridge sections.

Research shows that the steel reinforcement in the concrete, as designed in the past, ages faster than planned. To ensure safety on and under the viaducts, we implemented a weight restriction for the A12 viaducts at the Velperbroek junction at the end of 2024.

In addition, we are keeping a close eye on the viaducts. The safety structure we are now placing consists of a row of pipe piles in the inner and outer curves under the viaducts.

After placing the structure, the number of lanes on the Velperbroek circuit remains unchanged.

Disruption A12

The installation of the structure is expected to last until mid-April 2025. The contractor places the structure while traffic continues over the Velperbroek circuit.

There is limited disruption to traffic. Only in April 2025 are night closures necessary. The exact dates will be announced later.
