RIVM advises consumers to check the amount of N-acetylcysteine in dietary supplements

In the Netherlands, dietary supplements containing the substances N-acetylcysteine, L-cysteine, and/or L-cystine are sold. The supplements are intended to help the body detoxify. There are supplements that, if used according to the packaging, can lead to an intake that may cause side effects. Therefore, the RIVM advises users to ensure they do not consume too much.

Adults can consume a maximum of 1200 milligrams of N-acetylcysteine or 900 mg of L-cysteine or L-cystine per day without side effects. For children aged 2 to 18 years, the maximum amount is lower. Furthermore, the RIVM advises against using these supplements for children under two years old.

Registered as a medicine

The substance N-acetylcysteine is also registered as a mucolytic medicine. It is advised not to use dietary supplements in combination with this medicine because it can lead to excessive intake. This may result in gastrointestinal complaints.

Safety assessment

The RIVM has assessed the safety of N-acetylcysteine at the request of the Ministry of VWS Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport)NAC N-acetylcysteine (N-acetylcysteine) is converted in the body into the substances L-cysteine or L-cystine. Because these two substances may also be present in the supplements, the RIVM has assessed all three substances.
