Rotterdam is getting over 100 new social rental homes that are sustainably built. Using materials like wood reduces CO2 emissions. The municipality financially supports these projects. In Rotterdam, everyone has the right to a comfortable and sustainable home.
There are 4 planned projects for a total of 122 social rental homes. At least 30 percent of the materials used are sustainable, like wood, which is known as biobased building. This method significantly reduces CO2 emissions.
Subsidy
The municipality wants all residents, regardless of their income, to live in sustainable homes. These houses are more energy-efficient than traditional rental homes and have high energy labels, resulting in lower energy bills.
Building these homes is expensive. Therefore, the municipality provides 950,000 euros in subsidies to four housing corporations that are constructing the homes. Agreements have been made with Hef Wonen, Havensteder, Woonstad, and Woonbron.
Comfortable Home
Alderman Chantal Zeegers (Climate, Construction and Housing): In Rotterdam, we believe everyone has the right to a sustainable and comfortable home, regardless of their financial situation. With these agreements, we show that affordability and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Climate Agreement
Rotterdam aims for lower CO2 emissions, as traditional construction methods emit up to three times more CO2 than necessary for the Paris climate goals. Therefore, a plan has been made with partners to build more sustainably. The recently signed agreement is a step in the right direction.
*The Paris Climate Agreement states that Europe must reduce CO2 emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030. This is crucial to keep global warming well below 2 degrees.
