On February 24, it was three years since Russia invaded Ukraine. At the start of the Tuesday meeting on March 4, the Dutch Senate reflected on the invasion and the Ukrainians fighting for their freedom under difficult circumstances. The chargé daffaires of the Ukrainian embassy in the Netherlands, Anatolii Solovei, attended the commemoration.
Senate President Jan Anthonie Bruijn emphasized in his speech the importance of continued support for Ukraine and maintaining attention on the war. In recent weeks, much has happened at the diplomatic level among world leaders. Developments unfold so rapidly that it sometimes seems like we forget who it is all about: the people in Ukraine who have lived in fear and uncertainty for three years, hoping for peace, safety, and freedom.
In recent years, it has become customary in the Dutch Senate to commemorate the war in Ukraine in plenary sessions, a sad tradition. Bruijn: Especially in the year we celebrate eighty years of freedom in the Netherlands, it is important that we do not forget the Ukrainians and continue to express our support for them.
