A 30-year-old Dutch man was extradited from Spain on Friday, January 31. He is a suspect in an investigation into the encrypted communication service Matrix. That platform was dismantled on December 3, 2024, by Dutch and French authorities in an international operation supported by Eurojust and Europol.
The Spanish Policía Nacional (UDYCO Central) arrested two suspects in Marbella on December 3 at the request of the Netherlands. One of them, the 30-year-old Dutchman, has now been extradited. This afternoon he arrived at Schiphol under the escort of the Royal Marechaussee. He is suspected of having participated in the criminal service Matrix for some time. The man is also suspected of international cocaine trafficking in 2020 based on messages from the encrypted communication service Sky ECC. On Monday, February 3, he will appear before the examining magistrate.
The other suspect, a 53-year-old man of Lithuanian nationality, is still in pre-trial detention in Spain. He is considered the suspected owner and operator of Matrix. The Spanish investigating judge still has to decide on his extradition.
