Dear Minister Walker,
Ladies and gentlemen,
I am honored to speak today at the representation of Baden-Württemberg. Just a month into my role as Commissioner for Environment, Water, and Circular Economy, I am excited about President von der Leyens trust in me. We must rethink our approach to environmental standards and business opportunities.
Water, a vital resource, is finally recognized in a Commissioners job title. Its crucial for Europes industrial and digital strategies. Baden-Württemberg is a leader in innovation, home to top universities and industries. Yet, challenges like low water levels in the Rhine highlight the need for a resilient water strategy.
Water is precious and undervalued. Its time to prioritize it politically. Clean freshwater access is as critical as affordable energy. Many industries rely heavily on water, yet we take it for granted. This mindset must change due to climate change and mismanagement.
In Europe, weve made progress in wastewater treatment and clean water access, but pollution remains a challenge. Only 37% of water bodies met ecological standards in 2021. We need urgent action to secure water supply and manage water-related disasters.
The European Union must ensure water security, reduce flood risks, and mitigate drought impacts. We need a bold vision for a water-resilient society, supported by concrete actions. Innovation and investment in water management are essential.
Baden-Württemberg plays a crucial role in this strategy, with its proactive government and innovative companies. Lets work together for a sustainable water future. Thank you.
