Speech by Commissioner Várhelyi at the 4th EU Health Summit

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.

European healthcare faces many challenges. Demographics are shifting, chronic diseases are increasing, and costs are rising. We lack enough healthcare professionals and medicines. Geopolitical issues, climate change, and living costs add to the pressure. However, with the right strategy, we can strengthen the EU as an innovation leader and reshape health.

Digital technologies drive this change, especially in areas like cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment. AI can accelerate therapy development and enhance personalized medicine. The European Health Data Space will securely share health data, fostering collaboration and innovation.

Trust is vital for innovation. We have introduced a cybersecurity action plan for healthcare providers. Protecting data and systems is crucial to prevent disruptions from cyberattacks.

Regulatory updates are needed. Our pharmaceutical laws require modernization to support innovation. The Critical Medicines Act and Biotech Act will encourage production and biotech advancements.

Healthcare systems must embrace safe and innovative medical devices. We aim to support preventive health and address inequalities across the EU, focusing on antimicrobial resistance and investment in new antibiotics.

European health must emerge stronger, delivering a Health Union that leads in diagnostics and therapies. Together, we can reshape Europes health future.

Thank you.
