Speech by President Von der Leyen at the EU Ambassadors Conference 2025

“Check against delivery”

Dear HR/VP, my dear Kaja,

Secretary-General,

Ambassadors,

Let me start with a warm welcome and thanks to all of you for your service to Europe. Your support and insights on missions have been invaluable. I am proud to represent Europe with such an exceptional diplomatic team. Congratulations to your new Secretary-General, dear Belén. We look forward to working with you with the full support of the Commission. In these turbulent times, we rely on your experience and leadership to navigate forward together.

This year, lets break from the norm. Instead of listing achievements, we must focus on the evolving global landscape and the need for a direct and focused foreign policy.

Europe must navigate this harsher world with a policy for its people. The interconnectedness of global trade and digital communications has shifted, and we see a rise in competitive geopolitics. Our task is to adapt and remain a reliable partner by staying true to our values while being agile and engaging in diplomacy that serves our interests.

Economic competition is accelerating, from technology to clean energy. Our Competitiveness Compass aims to close the innovation gap and enhance economic security. We must safeguard our interests while promoting positive economic statecraft, avoiding a global race to the bottom.

We value our transatlantic partnership with the United States, crucial for global stability and economic integration. We will strengthen cooperation in critical areas while protecting our interests.

Our message to global partners: Europe is ready to engage where mutual benefits exist, offering transparent and mutually advantageous deals. We continue to invest in Global Gateway and strengthen trading partnerships, ensuring fair and beneficial outcomes for Europeans.

As we mark significant diplomatic anniversaries, like our relationship with China, we aim to rebalance trade ties while maintaining a constructive dialogue.

The war in Ukraine remains central, affecting Europes future. We support Ukraines resistance with financial and military aid, while increasing pressure on Russia. Our commitment to a united Europe and support for Ukraine is unwavering.

Europe is ready to engage globally, addressing challenges like climate change and health. We strive for peace and stability, particularly in the Middle East.

We count on all of you to help shape a prosperous and secure future for Europe. Lets focus on what is possible and lead with reasoned optimism. Thank you, and long live Europe.
