Ladies and gentlemen,
I am pleased to address the state of water in the EU today. Water is vital for life, food production, and business. However, challenges like droughts and pollution threaten our water supply. The European Commission is developing a Water Resilience Strategy to address these issues.
In Spain, 74% of the land faces desertification. Across Europe, citizens feel the impact of climate change daily. Our aim is to ensure water security by promoting water efficiency and circularity. This strategy will involve dialogue with Member States and stakeholders, focusing on sustainable water management.
The package presented today includes reports on water, flood, and marine strategies, highlighting pollution and flood risks. We must invest in prevention and early warning systems. The strategy seeks to bridge the gap in current legislation implementation.
Lastly, our call for evidence aims to engage all Europeans in this critical issue. Together, we can build a water-resilient Europe by 2050.
Thank you.
