Opening Speech by Commissioner Costas Kadis at the SEArica Conference in the European Parliament

Honourable Members of the European Parliament, distinguished guests,

It is an honor to be here to discuss the future of our oceans and how the European Ocean Pact can contribute to their health and sustainability.

I wish to thank SEARICA for their dedication to maritime challenges. We aim for an ambitious and forward-looking Ocean Pact.

The EU Ocean Pact should be an integrated framework for all EU ocean-related policies, focusing on sustainability and the involvement of all sectors.

Key objectives include protecting ocean health, developing a sustainable blue economy, and advancing ocean knowledge and governance.

We must invest in nature-based solutions like seagrass restoration and blue carbon initiatives.

Economic growth and environmental sustainability must go hand in hand. This requires investment in renewable marine energy and sustainable fisheries.

The Ocean Pact requires cooperation at national and international levels, with the involvement of all stakeholders.

We must also invest in marine education and youth initiatives.

I invite you to the European Ocean Days from March 3-7, an opportunity to discuss the future of our oceans.

The Parliament plays a crucial role in translating the Ocean Pact into concrete actions.

Thank you.
