Speech by President Von der Leyen at the Synchronisation Baltic Connectors Opening Event

Fellow leaders,

Distinguished guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today is a historic day in Vilnius for Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, as they join the European energy grid, ending reliance on Russian energy. This achievement, after 18 years of planning and over EUR 1.2 billion in European investment, highlights the Baltic States commitment to sovereignty and energy independence.

Previously, Europe depended heavily on Russian energy, which posed risks of economic instability and political leverage. With initiatives like REPowerEU, Europe has drastically reduced its dependency on Russian fossil fuels, exemplified by todays integration of the Baltic electricity grids into Europes energy market.

This journey also underscores resilience, as the Baltic States have fortified their energy infrastructure against external threats, serving as a model for Europe. President Niinistös blueprint for European preparedness further emphasizes the importance of coordination and protection of critical infrastructure.

The future of energy in Europe is clean and sustainable. The Baltic States are integrating renewable energy, which is not only environmentally friendly but also economically beneficial, creating jobs and enhancing competitiveness. This transformation aligns with the goal of completing the European Energy Union for seamless energy flow across the continent.

Today, we celebrate not just an energy milestone, but a testament to European integration and sovereignty. Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have played a pivotal role, and all of Europe rejoices in this achievement.

Long live the Baltics. Long live Europe. Thank you.
