Remarks by Commissioner Šefčovič at the European Parliament Plenary session on the 2025 Commission Work Programme

Dear Chair,

Honourable Members of the European Parliament.

It is a pleasure to present the Commissions 2025 work programme to you.

Let me begin by thanking you for the fruitful cooperation in preparing this important document.

This work programme, the first of our new political mandate, sets the tone for our work over the next five years. We must take bold action to enhance our security, prosperity, and democracy.

We aim to boost the competitiveness of European businesses and strengthen our economic resilience.

We need a joined-up approach. Therefore, we have adopted an ambitious implementation and simplification agenda alongside the work programme.

This agenda aims to simplify our rules, reduce burdens, and boost competitiveness and prosperity in the EU.

Honourable Members, let me highlight some key initiatives in the work programme.

Our recently adopted Competitiveness Compass will guide our efforts to enhance Europes competitiveness.

The Clean Industrial Deal will create the right conditions for industry to retain competitiveness while EU companies decarbonize.

We will work on improving our common defense capabilities to protect Europes security.

The new European Internal Security Strategy will present actions to ensure security—online and offline—is integrated into EU legislation and policies by design.

We will prioritize the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights and launch a roadmap to ensure quality jobs and address skills and labor gaps.

Finally, the pre-enlargement policy reviews will examine the consequences and impacts of enlargement on all EU policies.

Thank you, and I look forward to your interventions.
