President, Honourable Members of the European Parliament,
The Commission is closely monitoring the political situation in Serbia and the mobilization of citizens after the Novi Sad incident. Citizen participation, transparency, and accountability are crucial for democratic development.
In my open letter, I emphasized that fundamental values are central to our European project. Freedom of assembly must be peaceful and lawful. No violence should be tolerated, and the police must ensure the safety of demonstrators.
The Commission expresses concerns about the treatment of peaceful activists and illegal access to personal data. This is unacceptable and must be addressed by national authorities.
Disinformation and hostile rhetoric against the EU are unacceptable. There must be an inclusive dialogue for reforms that strengthen Serbias European future.
It is our priority to support Serbia on its European path. Reforms enhance the fight against corruption and promote media freedom and civic engagement.
Serbias leadership has repeatedly committed to reforms. We look forward to the implementation of these commitments.
The EU accession process requires commitment from the entire society. It must be a national project owned by everyone.
Honourable Members, the Commission regularly assesses the situation in Serbia and supports the necessary reforms for the benefit of all citizens.
