Commissioner Lahbibs Speech at the European Parliament Event on 20 Years since the 2004 Tsunami and Its Legacy

I want to begin by thanking DG ECHO and the Members of Parliament for organizing this significant commemoration.

Today is a solemn day. We gather to remember a rare tragedy that leaves a lasting mark. I recall being on my way to Paris on my first day as a news anchor, witnessing the initial reports and images of devastation. The term tsunami became known to me that day.

The scale of the disaster was immense: 1.7 million displaced, 14 countries affected, and 230,000 lives lost. This tragedy sparked a global wave of compassion and the largest aid operation. The EU responded swiftly, providing €123 million in humanitarian aid and activating our Civil Protection Mechanism.

This event was transformative for international humanitarian efforts. We learned that no nation can manage such emergencies alone, emphasizing the importance of cooperation. The EU continues to invest in disaster preparedness and has enhanced its Union Civil Protection Mechanism.

We have established the Emergency Response Coordination Centre and developed disaster scenarios to improve resilience. The EU collaborates with Southeast Asia on disaster preparedness, strengthening ties with ASEAN. By working together, we aim to meet the Sendai Framework targets by 2030.

Today, we honor the lives lost and are motivated to create safer, stronger communities. Together, we can turn this loss into a legacy of hope.
