Speech by Commissioner Šuica at the 19th Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM)

Dear Speaker of the House of Representatives,

Dear Vice-President of the Senate,

Dear President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean,

Dear Vice-Presidents of the Parliaments of Egypt and Montenegro,

Dear Vice-Presidents of the Shura Councils of Qatar and Saudi Arabia,

Honourable Members,

It is a pleasure and honour to be here today. The Mediterranean region holds a special place in European history and heart, connecting us with Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Our focus is on fostering partnerships for sustainable growth, addressing climate change, and promoting regional stability.

We are committed to enhancing partnerships between the European Union, the Southern Neighbourhood, and the Gulf countries. This cooperation is crucial, especially in times of geopolitical uncertainty.

The Mediterranean faces challenges like political instability, climate change, and demographic pressures. However, positive developments are emerging, such as ceasefires in conflict areas and new leadership in countries like Syria and Lebanon.

Our priority is to establish a New Pact for the Mediterranean, focusing on economic opportunities, clean technologies, and investments. This includes a Trans-Mediterranean Energy and Clean Tech Cooperation Initiative to boost renewable energy and clean tech manufacturing.

We will also address migration issues by enhancing legal pathways for skills and talent, while combating migrant smuggling.

As we move forward, we aim to present the New Pact in the autumn of this year, ensuring it is tailored to the needs of our partners and supported by the Member States.

Thank you for your attention.
