Speech of Commissioner Kos - Europes Strength: A Matter of Choice

Twelve years ago, when I became the Slovenian ambassador in Berlin, I met my colleagues from the then EU countries. I spoke with the UK ambassador, who had a residence near the Brandenburg Gate. I told him, It is easier for you from a big country, while I come from a small one. He interrupted, saying, You will be as big as you claim to be. I recalled this when reading an article by Finlands ex-Prime Minister in the Economist, stating, Europe must rid itself of the illusion of weakness. I agree; Europe can choose its strength. We have a far larger economy than Russia and are more innovative. We must not be passive but rather proactive, like in Moldova last month.

Amid elections, Moldova faced energy blackmail from Russia. We acted decisively, offering budget support and integrating Moldova into our electricity market. This reduced Russian influence and ensured Moldovas energy independence. We also included Transnistria in our plans, promoting stability and integration.

Similarly, in Ukraine, we aim to integrate its energy and defence sectors into Europes. This benefits both sides, enhancing energy security and economic growth. Ukraines potential in defence could strengthen Europes security. Accelerating Ukraines EU accession is crucial, with reforms in judiciary and anti-corruption measures.

Our efforts will bolster Ukraines economy and EU ties, demanding bold decisions. As President Zelenskyy said, I believe in Europe. We must rise to this challenge, acting boldly to secure our continents future.
