Statement by President von der Leyen on the re-launch of the negotiations for an EU-Malaysia Free Trade Agreement

Today, Europe and Malaysia are taking a significant step forward together. During Prime Minister Anwar bin Ibrahims visit to Europe, I am pleased to announce the re-launch of negotiations for an EU-Malaysia Free Trade Agreement.

This news comes at a crucial time. As geopolitical tensions increase, Europe and Malaysia are choosing cooperation and new opportunities for our people.

Europe and Malaysia share a commitment to a rules-based international order, economic openness, and regional stability. Europe remains dedicated to a free and open Indo-Pacific.

As the third largest trading partner in ASEAN, Malaysia plays a central role. Todays announcement reaffirms Europes commitment to strengthening ties with both Malaysia and ASEAN.

A free trade agreement would elevate our trade relationship. With trade worth €45 billion annually, we will unlock even greater benefits.

Like all European free trade agreements, this is not just about economic exchanges. We focus on strong commitments to labor rights and environmental protection. This agreement provides a dialogue platform for issues close to the EUs heart.

Now that we have restarted these negotiations, I am confident that our teams will achieve an agreement we can all be proud of. Lets get to work.
