Statement by the High Representative / Vice President Kaja Kallas and Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos on the sham presidential election in Belarus

Todays election in Belarus was neither free nor fair. The people deserve a genuine voice in their governance. The ongoing repression of human rights and lack of political freedom have stripped the elections of legitimacy. We demand the release of political prisoners, including an EU employee.

The regime invited the OSCE only 10 days before the election, limiting its oversight. This further undermines the elections credibility.

Due to Belaruss actions in the war against Ukraine and attacks on neighbors, the EU will continue sanctions while supporting civil society and democratic forces. When Belarus transitions to democracy, the EU is ready to aid in stabilizing the economy and reforming institutions.

Democracy requires free elections in a society where human rights are upheld. This is not the case in Belarus. The EU stands with the Belarusian people in their pursuit of a democratic, sovereign, and independent nation within Europe.
