Open Letter from the Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos in Response to Letters Received on Serbia

Marta KOS

Commissioner for Enlargement

I recently received several letters from Serbian academics, political representatives, and civil society organizations expressing concerns about Serbias situation.

Ive been closely following the protests in Serbia. I want to respond to these concerns and emphasize the European Unions core values.

Freedom of assembly is a fundamental right

Core values are central to our European project and must be respected. Freedom of assembly is a fundamental right that must be upheld. It should be exercised peacefully and legally. Incidents against demonstrators have been reported. We expect a full, impartial, and prompt investigation. No violence should be tolerated. We expect Serbian police to continue ensuring demonstrators safety. Language inciting violence and a lack of mutual respect cannot be the solution.

The European agenda strengthens the rule of law

It remains the EUs and President von der Leyens priority to support Serbia in advancing on its European path and becoming part of the European Union.

The path to EU membership involves reforms that enshrine our shared values in law and practice. Serbias journey towards the EU offers solutions to many current issues.

The reforms part of the EU accession process will strengthen the fight against corruption, ensure judicial independence and institutional accountability, promote media freedom and pluralism, and improve electoral conditions. If implemented correctly, these reforms will have a transformative effect benefiting all citizens and bringing Serbia closer to the European Union.

EU accession is a whole-of-society project

The EU accession process requires the entire societys effort. It needs to be a national project owned by everyone: the government, parliament, opposition, civil society, every region, town, and village, and ultimately every citizen.

It is crucial to establish conditions for an inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders, political actors, institutions, and civil society members to address necessary reforms for Serbias European future.

This will strengthen Serbian society and consolidate Serbias path towards EU membership.

With my best regards,
