Statement by President von der Leyen at the joint press point with Indian Prime Minister Modi

Dear Prime Minister Modi, dear Narendra,

Ministers,

Commissioners,

Excellencies,

Friends,

Thank you for the warm welcome, its a taste of Indias legendary hospitality. Today is special: Europe and India are coming together, just as the planets align perfectly. This symbolizes the transformation and growth we aspire to achieve together.

With the entire College of Commissioners, I am here on our first trip outside Europe since taking office. This shows how much we value our partnership, aiming to elevate it to new heights. India and Europe, as the largest democracies, are bound by shared values. We collaborate on resilient supply chains and a free Indo-Pacific. Today, we lay the foundation for a new Strategic Agenda.

Firstly, we focus on economic growth. Europe is Indias largest trading partner; last year, we exchanged EUR 120 billion worth of goods. We aim to finalize our Free Trade Agreement this year and strengthen our trade and technology ties, particularly in semiconductors.

Secondly, a joint technology agenda. We launch a Taskforce for green hydrogen and focus on digital technologies. AI should serve people, not the other way around. Together, we can make AI positively contribute to our economies and societies.

Finally, cooperation in security and defense. India is a pillar of certainty. We enhance our cooperation in cybersecurity and maritime security, and expand joint naval exercises.

Prime Minister Modi, dear Narendra,

Ministers,

Commissioners,

We return to Europe with fresh ideas for future cooperation. Together, India and the EU are greater than the sum of their parts. The planets are aligned – as are Europe and India.
