Good afternoon everyone.
On Tuesday, we will mark 100 days since the College of Commissioners took office. These days signify a time of rapid change and geopolitical shifts. Despite these challenges, the Commission has acted swiftly, focusing on prosperity, security, and democracy. We appointed the first-ever Commissioner for Defence, which proves essential in this era of geostrategic competition. Europe remains open to collaboration, offering stability and predictability.
We have built new partnerships and forged significant agreements with countries like Switzerland, Mexico, and Mercosur. These agreements promote trade and protect vulnerable sectors. Cooperation with India has strengthened in trade and innovation, aiming for a free trade agreement.
Our prosperity initiatives include the Competitiveness Compass and the Clean Industrial Deal, supporting European industries in their transition. Dialogues with sectors such as agriculture and automotive have been initiated to develop strategic plans.
The urgency of change has increased, as European values are under threat. This week, we unanimously support REARM Europe, a historic defence package. This strengthens Europes economic and innovative power.
To achieve success, we need to involve more private investors. The European Savings and Investments Union is launched to stimulate necessary investments. Progress is crucial for Europe as an economic powerhouse.
Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. Therefore, I will convene the first Security College to regularly inform commissioners about security developments.
On Tuesday, we present an ambitious proposal for return policy, a key element of the Migration and Asylum Pact. We aim for a European system for return with clear rules and respect for international obligations.
In summary: this Commission is ready to tackle the current crises. We have a once-in-a-generation chance to build a stronger and more prosperous Europe. Let us seize this moment, for it is Europes moment.
