The trade relationship between the EU and the US is the largest worldwide, bringing prosperity and jobs to millions. Today, the US imposes a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports. We regret this decision as tariffs are harmful taxes that disrupt businesses and affect consumers, increasing prices and risking jobs. The EU must protect its interests with strong but fair countermeasures. As the US tariffs amount to USD 28 billion, our response will be EUR 26 billion in countermeasures, implemented in two phases from April 1st to April 13th. We remain open to dialogue to avoid economic harm and have tasked Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič with negotiations for better solutions.
