A few weeks before the end of World War II, a stray German bomb fell on Bergpolder, killing 34 residents. The commemoration of this tragedy is on Saturday, March 15 this year, with Mayor Carola Schouten attending.
It is the last bomb on Rotterdam. A stray German V1 - an unmanned aircraft with a bomb on board - hit a block of houses at the corner of Treubstraat and Kerkdijkstraat in March 1945.
The impact was significant. 34 residents did not survive, and dozens were injured. The devastation was also enormous, with about 30 houses completely destroyed and 80 severely damaged. 7 weeks later, the war was over.
Commemoration
For a long time, there was no attention to the bombing. There was also no annual commemoration. That changed due to the efforts of a few neighborhood residents. They founded the Stichting Herdenking Treubstraat and subsequently campaigned for a monument.
They succeeded. In 2020, the artwork De schitterende scherf was unveiled. It can be found in the square at Treubstraat and Kerdijkstraat. This is also where the commemoration of the bombing will take place on Saturday, March 15, which occurred 80 years ago this year.
The program starts at 1:00 PM. Around 1:15 PM, Mayor Carola Schouten will give a short speech, followed by children from De Blijberg reading out the names of all victims. Everyone is welcome to attend the commemoration.
