House of Representatives approves the Anti-Discrimination Act for Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba

On February 18, 2025, the House of Representatives approved the implementation of equal treatment legislation in Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba.

Based on Article 1 of the Constitution, various laws in the Netherlands guarantee equal treatment. These laws do not yet apply in Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba. The principle is that legislation should apply to all of the Netherlands unless there is a good reason to deviate from this.

Research shows that the bill, which introduces equal treatment laws, is feasible and important for the residents of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba. Therefore, the cabinet, at the request of the executive boards, is working on the implementation of this legislation in the islands. Residents will soon be able to appeal for help if they feel discriminated against. To receive assistance and support for discrimination, residents can approach an anti-discrimination facility. This facility will be integrated with the office for free legal aid, which is being prepared for each island.

Next steps in the Senate

The bill is now sent to the Senate for consideration. It will be finalized if the Senate also approves it.

For more information about the legislation, see the associated parliamentary documents.
