Utrecht has good news; it is receiving three million euros from the government for 375 student rooms via SSH. Construction will start within two years.
“This is fantastic,” said aldermen Dennis de Vries and Eelco Eerenberg. “There is a great shortage of student housing. Thanks to this subsidy, we can help 375 students with housing, including shared facilities such as a kitchen and living room. This is not only good for their development but also fun and important for their student life.”
Kwekerij phase 4
SSH wants to build 375 student rooms in De Kwekerij but previously had financial problems. The municipality and SSH jointly applied for the Housing Scheme for Target Groups. This scheme promotes the rapid realization of student rooms. The Ministry of Housing gives priority to these rooms, which is why De Kwekerij was nominated; phase 4 consists entirely of non-independent rooms.
Phases 1, 2, and 3 are already completed and occupied. Phase 1 has 318 independent units, phase 2 has 244 starter apartments, and phase 3 has 206 rooms. The complex also includes catering and an exhibition space. With phase 4, De Kwekerij will be completed.
Second subsidy round
Moreover, the House of Representatives has decided to allocate money again for a second subsidy round for student rooms. This means that Utrecht can submit another project for subsidy next year. The specific projects are not yet known.
