Utrecht wants fewer small schools and more multifunctional use

The municipality of Utrecht is committed to reducing small schools and increasing multifunctional use of buildings. This is part of the new Comprehensive Housing Plan for Education. The number of students increases by 3000 annually, requiring tough decisions about school buildings. Alderman Eelco Eerenberg emphasizes the importance of quality buildings for good education. Plans include fewer small schools and more community schools where children learn and live together. Schools with fewer than 191 students are encouraged to collaborate. Special education will also be combined with regular schools. Utrecht is launching three pilots for community schools, serving as meeting points in the neighborhood. By collaborating with organizations like sports clubs and libraries, children receive a broad development. The municipality makes agreements with school boards to set priorities, given the limited budgets for ambitious plans.
